VEHICLE DRIVERS

"I will build a car for the great multitude. It will be large enough for the family, but small enough for the individual to run and care for." Henry Ford recounted his vision of the Model T in his 1922 book My Life and Work:
“Don't find fault, find a remedy: anyone can complain.” “If you think you can do a thing or think you can't do a thing, you're right.”
“If there is any one secret of success, it lies in the ability to get the other person’s point of view and see things from that person’s angle as well as from your own”

— Henry Ford
Neither "Faster” - speed wasn’t the problem or selling point of cars over horses. Speed wasn’t the problem. Spending huge amounts of money, time, and space on keeping horses alive and dealing with the literal horse shit was the problem.

"A Ford researcher might listen as their participant explains their horse problems: “I want to visit my sister more often, but she lives more than a day’s ride away.” But ultimately, while a researcher or participant might have creative ideas to fix those problems, their primary goal is not to identify the solution. What a participant wants is to fix their problems. What a researcher wants is to collate, size, and illustrate these problems in order to inspire innovation."

A common myth is that all model T’s were black. While Henry Ford did say “Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it’s black,” the policy was in place solely for efficiency and uniformity. The car was only offered in black from 1914-1925, however before and after that various models of the vehicle could be purchased in a variety of colors including blue, red, grey, and green.

Red light running is 'The greatest fear every day" when he comes to work. - Ron McCorkel, Director of Maintenance at Milwaukee County Transit System (MCTS)

"While driving through Milwaukee's Sherman Park neighborhood with instructor Eric Christon, it was clear that safety is a driving factor behind the wheel. Christon has been with the transit system for eight years.

'We've seen a lot of accidents. We've had a lot of accidents that happen in front of the bus station and stuff,' said Christon. 'People are on their phones, eating, so they're not as focused on the road. So, we're watching for them also.' Christon shared safety techniques that drivers use to avoid crashes. He said the techniques are something that all drivers on the road can use."

While the unprecedented COVID-19 pandemic upended many aspects of daily life, including how people get around, one terrible, long-term trend was unchanged: the alarming increase in people being struck and killed while walking. .... This epidemic continues growing worse because our nation's streets are dangerous by design, designed primarily to move cars quickly at the expense of keeping everyone safe. The result in 2020 was a significant increase in all traffic fatalities, even with less driving overall due to the pandemic.

"'They're gone.' When she {sister} said that, I couldn't take it. I was screaming like a baby. I was walking and pacing up and down up and down.

Yesterday I felt, even today, that I'm in a living nightmare and I'm going to wake up and this is a joke, it's a dream and it never happened. I mean, this is the worst pain I've felt in my life. To lose both of my parents that way. They didn't deserve that. They did not deserve to go out like that." - Steve Ortiz (son)

The penalties are little for drivers, and the solutions are empty, as they do not change the behavior of the drivers. The only thing that does is geographical changes, like "Continuous Sidewalks." Continuous Sidewalks save lives.

IT IS CLEAR; not only does the punishment not fit the crime, as it is maiming and murder (allowed to even still drive), but reminders do not work, especially that one only needs to "look out" for 5 days, instead of everyday. Driving is a privilege, not a right, and ruins lives, businesses, and families - whose loved ones were stolen, especially by, "Hit and Run" murderers. Must become a FELONY, treated same as injury and murder laws, and no ability to drive any motor vehicle - for life.

"Since 2020, there have been 48 incidents of vehicles striking State Highway Administration trucks while tending to traffic incidents, including 17 so far this year. Nationally, 50 traffic incident responders were killed in the line of duty last year, according to the Federal Highway Administration. Untold is the number of life-altering injuries responders incur every year while tending to a traffic incident.

'Our emergency responders who patrol more than 2,000 lane miles of roadways in Maryland 24/7 are often the first to arrive at crash scenes ready to assist motorists,' said State Highway Administrator William Pines. 'All motorists must stay alert, slow down and move over when approaching a traffic incident so our workers can safely do their jobs and restore traffic flow as quickly as possible.' ....

Violating the law is a misdemeanor; carrying a $110 fine and one point on the violator's driving license. If the violation causes a crash, the fine is $150 and three points. If there is a death or serious injury, the fine is $750 and three points."

"A CR analysis of industry data shows that the hood height of passenger trucks has increased by an average of at least 11 percent since 2000 and that new pickups grew 24 percent heavier on average from 2000 to 2018. On some heavy-duty trucks, such as the Ford F-250, the front edge of the hood is now 55 inches or more off the ground—as tall as the roof of some sedans. New CR data shows that drivers have poorer front sight lines, creating a blind spot that can hide a pedestrian or smaller car right in front. 'These trends are alarming,' says William Wallace, CR's manager of safety policy. 'Automakers must put safety first for people inside and outside the vehicle.'

More than 42,000 people were killed and 4.8 million seriously injured on U.S. roadways last year, an 8 percent increase from the year before, despite a decrease in miles traveled. Pedestrian fatalities rose 46 percent over the past decade, according to the Governors Highway Safety Association, and the deaths reflect societal inequities. Low-income people are more likely to be struck; elderly pedestrians and wheelchair users are at higher risk of mortality when hit by a vehicle; and Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous people are overrepresented in pedestrian crash fatalities."

Unfortunately, another law that does nothing to change speed-lover driver behavior:

"Moving over, or slowing down, isn't much to ask to help keep everyone on our roads safe,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary James F. Ports, Jr.

Sadly, several motorists tending to disabled vehicles have been killed on the side of the road here, in Maryland. Kennedy Sookal, of Reisterstown, and Stuart Johnson, of Baltimore, were both killed in separate incidents in 2019, as they tried to change a tire on the side of the road.

In a 2021 AAA poll of Maryland first responders, including law enforcement, EMS, tow truck drivers and roadside workers, more than 90% of those surveyed said that they personally have been involved in a near miss incident or had their life threatened because a motorist failed to move over. ...
Nationally, between 2013 and 2020, work zone fatalities increased 45%. In 2020, over 102,000 work zone crashes were estimated to have occurred, resulting in over 45,000 injuries and 857 fatalities, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
Not only are tow providers and other emergency responders being killed on the side of the road, motorists are as well. Hundreds of people are killed and thousands are injured each year in crashes involving stopped or disabled vehicles, .... In reviewing federal crash statistics, it is estimated that 566 people were killed and 14,371 injured each year over 2016-18 in crashes on all types of roads involving a disabled vehicle in which visibility was likely a factor.

WALK SAFE????

Why "Safe System" - As A System Does not Work

"The central vision of the Safe System approach is zero traffic deaths and serious injuries - there is no other acceptable number—and getting to zero requires a focus on equity. That is, the goal is to eliminate death and serious injury for everyone using the roads, which includes people of all ages, abilities, races, ethnicities, and income levels. This not only implies, but demands, investment according to need. In a Safe System, we do what it takes to achieve the same outcome for all: zero road deaths and serious injuries."

"Safety System" authors perspective is soley from the driver, not from pedestrian. "Reduction" through physically forcing vehicles to slow down, like rumble strips work. Any expectation for drivers to change, spending limitless monies to make more winding roads or "accommodate" sleepiness, texting, and other distractions is like expecting a dog to never bark. The perspective of saving pedestrian lives is solely in Continuous Sidewalks, of which the countries sited - have. Erroneous study.

"People who can't afford cars are also less likely to live in neighborhoods where it's safe to walk. Black Americans, Native Americans, wheelchair users, and people walking in low-income areas are much more likely to be killed by a car, a structural disparity that worsened during the pandemic."

"States are given little incentive to reduce fatalities; federal transportation money keeps flowing to them regardless. 'I would love it if states were actually penalized for rising crash rates,” says Courtney Cobbs, a co-founder of the nonprofit, Better Streets Chicago.

While states are required to set safety performance targets, they function less as death reduction goals than as forecasts of how many people will be allowed to die. "'Really embarrassingly lax. They are literally planning for more traffic deaths.'" - Leah Shahum, founder and director of Vision Zero Network.

"Automobile dependency and sprawl create communities where it is easy to drive but difficult to get around by other modes. This is unfair to non-drivers and increases many costs. This report investigates the roots of these problems: planning distortions that favor driving over other modes and dispersion over compact development. To be fair and efficient, planning must reflect certain principles including consumer sovereignty (it responds to consumer demands), fair share investments (each group or individual receives comparable public resources), efficient pricing (travellers pay for the infrastructure they use), comprehensive analysis (it considers all significant goals and impacts), and accessibility-based analysis (it maximizes access not mobility). This report identifies common planning practices that violate these principles, evaluates their impacts, and recommends reforms for efficiency and equity. This analysis indicates that given better options and incentives, travellers would drive less, rely more on non-auto modes, save money, and be better off overall as a result."

SOLUTIONS

SOLUTIONS AT: WALK N' ROLL

"As a paraplegic, in a wheelchair, with a car and a drivers license, I'd so much rather use public transit (if it existed) than my own car. It'd be so much better to just roll a mile to a train, roll on and chill for a bit, to roll off and roll , disassemble my chair, pack it away have to constantly focus all the way to the gas station where I have to reassemble my chair, climb out, pay more for fuel than what I would for train fare, climb back in, disassemble my chair, pack it away, and have to maintain focus through stop and go, bumper to bumper traffic finally getting where I'm going to then struggle to find and PAY MORE to park and have to reassemble my chair, climb into it and have to roll as far or farther than I would from a train stop.
Don't get me wrong driving does have its uses/ benefits. Shopping, moving large items or large amounts of items, privacy, whatever. But for just regular day to day travel, i.e. work, appointments, meetings, recreation, I dream of functional public transit on a daily basis.
What's worse, is cities like Chicago that actually do have a decent public transit, it's so far out dated that I struggle to even be able to use it in my chair. Not all stations are handicapped accessible. So to get where I'm going, I might have to get off 2 or 3 spots before/after where I'm actually going to then roll back on my own. At which point, it starts to not make sense to even use at all. - Eddy B. November 9th, 2022 [One of many similar comments "The USA Will Never Build Walkable Cities" - Frank Laundry]

HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA

WE REMEMBER
The City wishes to recognize those who suffered injuries and those whose lives were recently
lost on City streets

"In November 2018, Mayor Eric Papenfuse signed a letter committing the City of Harrisburg to Vision Zero principles, including providing safe, healthy, and equitable mobility for everyone in Harrisburg. As stated in the Mayor's commitment letter, the recent loss of residents’ lives to traffic crashes is unacceptable, and an immediate change in the City's approach to street design and operations is necessary."

Harrisburg, like most cities throughout the United States, has historically approached the transportation system in traditional auto-centric ways. However, it has become clear that a new approach must be taken to improve safety on the city streets. Within the past five years alone, 19 deaths and 105 reported injuries occurred via traffic crashes. These devastating events have served as a wake-up call to City residents and City leadership. Death and injury on City streets are unacceptable, and requires an immediate change in the approach to street design and operations in the City.

The individuals killed and injured on Harrisburg streets were exercising what should be fundamental rights, such as commuting to work safely and having the ability to walk around the neighborhood, go shopping, and visit various businesses in a safe manner. Cynthia Wilson, a 62-year-old long-time Harrisburg resident, was struck and killed while crossing State Street on a short shopping trip on March 5, 2018. According to those who knew her, Cynthia always had a kind word for her neighbors, and she preferred walking to driving. Donald Welsh, a loving 27-year old uncle of 12 nieces and nephews, was struck and killed while cycling on May 25, 2017. Donald used his bicycle as his primary means of transportation to and from work. As Harrisburg moves forward towards its goal of zero severe injuries and fatalities, the City wishes to recognize those who suffered injuries and those whose lives were lost on our streets."

Because fashion is smashin' the true meaning of it ....

It ain't no joke, when a mama's handkerchief is soaked
With her tears because her baby's life has been revoked ....

So don't delay, act now - supplies are running out

"Why Alleys Are the Most Important Spaces in a City" - Stewart Hicks (2022)

Close Caption "on" Suggestion (he speaks fast)
"Acknowledging the conveniences that walkable urbanism offers the elderly, sociologists as early as the 1980s identified what they call a N.O.R.C. — a Naturally Occurring Retirement Community."
"Replacing transit with small Automatic Vehicles (AV) in congested city centers would cripple mobility."
LONDON: "Repaved three two-lane regional roads without centerlines, and compared driver speeds before and after. The results did not disappoint: when adjusted for the not insignificant impact of fresh pavement—which notably tends to encourage speeding—drivers on the reconfigured streets slowed down about 7 mph on average. In the context of danger to people walking, 7 mph is a huge margin. At the speeds witnessed in this study, around 30 mph, a 7 mph reduction can cut the risk of death almost in half. As one considers driver behavior, this study’s outcomes are unsurprising."

The economists agree: designing around the automobile is bankrupting us.

☸ From 1970 to today, we have doubled our roads. And what we have done is double the money we spend on transportation.

☸ 1970's: "We used to spend one out of ten dollars on transportation."

☸ 2022: "Now, we spend two dollars out of ten on transportation, because of this obligation, to own the vehicle."

☸ "'Working class Americans' are spending as much on transportation as they are on housing. And poor Americans are spending 40% on transportation. Because we have created this environment of where the automobile has become a prosthetic devise. It is like the artificial limb we cannot live without. And there is a tremendous cost."
