STREETCAR ROUTES TODAY (ALL PASSENGER RAIL)!

"Who needs a car. L.A.'s got the greatest transportation system in the world!"

AERIAL CONDUIT USERS: "Streetcar" = "Tram," "Trikken," "Tramwaj," "Tramway," and "Tramvay." "Street Railways" means, an entire streetcar system. "Gravity Road" = Rails. "Train" currently mainly fueled; newest being hydrogen powered, can use aerial electric lines too. "Streetcar-subway" goes underground into tunnels. "Lightrail" is a type of streetcar with few stops and their cars lasting approximately only 30 years. "Trolleybus" is rail-less, but unfortunately has tires. Aerial cable cars run along cables in the sky, and so too, rail-less.
UNDERGROUND CONDUIT USERS: "Cablecar." Ground cables cars have underground cable. In Poland, new cable lines are being built for their Tramwajs. Also, "Subways" - Rails and touch electric rail. Also, "Electric Trains."

SEEK HERE: STREETCAR VERSUS BUS

"We've paid a heavy price for the time we lost."
- Anthony Foxx, Former Mayor of Charlotte and United States Secretary of Transportation for President Barak Obama
Regarding the segregated, racist, and social classist nature of, "stolen", as well as financial cost to placing where rails were for streetcar infrastructure in Charlotte, and restarting the state of North Carolina train routes.

Streetcars have steel wheels that roll on steel rails, and have at least one trolley pole on each length side to run along the electric wires above. A streetcar makes stops when needed, but provides lots of stops, making no other transportation necessary, other than walking or rolling to the stop. There are two main Streetcar route types: One, Neighborhood Circle Loop Connectors; ability to use amenities in one's neighborhood and neighboring neighborhoods, and two, Mainstreet Corridors that Neighborhood Circle Loop Connectors meet in order to move people quickly through entire city, and beyond. "Dedicated - Right of Way Lanes" are mandatory for punctual service.

A "Light Rail" is a type of streetcar transportation with one or two trolley-poles that connect to electricity lines above who makes limited stops, often forcing another mode of transit to get to most stops. The stops in downtown areas can be still too spread out if not planned that the entire reason that people come from suburbs is the desire to go to a downtown city, whether for pleasure, business, or work.

"It's just $1.50, after all, right? Well, not to a single parent of two who relies on bus travel to get their kids to and from school and themselves to and from work. To them, that's almost $2,100 a year. Every year. Money that can now be used for better food, or a second pair of shoes, medicine, or any number of things that put money right back into the Kansas City economy." - Kansas City, Missouri

"I think everyone has gotten stuck in traffic and thought, 'Why doesn't this city have a better mass transit system?' I was curious why Los Angeles didn't have a better public transportation system, and through my research at the public library, I found out that at one time, it did." - Jake Berman

"The Global Streetcar Market is projected to expand at a significant CAGR of during the forecast period, 2020 - 2026. A streetcar can be defined as a train that runs along rails set into streets. It drives along with automobiles for much of its journey. Passengers want to travel safely and modern streetcars are manufactured by taking adequate safety precautions. Replica streetcars are new vehicles that incorporate the classic looks of vintage streetcar designs and have the reliability and durability of new vehicles."

"The demand for public transportation service is at its highest point in 50 years. The causes are many: rising gas prices, an increasingly urbanized population, growing numbers of seniors, and the preferences of the "millennial" generation. These factors and more are contributing to soaring ridership on existing transit routes. And more communities today are looking for funds to build and operate rail and bus lines than ever before."

"Together, this news represents a strong endorsement for streetcar projects at the local level: Interest in streetcar construction extends beyond the boundaries of the nation's capital. The mode's expansion into metropolitan areas nationwide is genuinely supported by a whole bevy of citizens and leaders from coast to coast, willing to put up their own funds for projects that they think will improve their communities’ development patterns and mobility options. ....

The clear commitments given by some localities to their own streetcar programs indicate that there is a future for such transportation in the United States, even if Washington takes its hands off."

"One of the joys of the tram is that it trundles along slowly enough, and close enough to the houses, cubby shops, alleys and pathways contiguous with its serpentine progress, to catch a considerable amount of the minutiae of daily life. Despite passing through one of the city’s most cramped quarters, the building of the line has actually preserved space, removing in effect, one light-impeding wall from the houses that stand huddled beside it. Residents have been quick to take advantage of this open corridor of sunlight. Look closely and you will see south-facing persimmons, loquats, and modest trellises of vine and kiwi. Random beds of earth at the side of the line, narrow and pinched, have been sown with gladiola, lupine and clumps of herbaceous growth, or simply left to run riot with wild grasses and weeds. Many residents have requisitioned the far side of the paths opposite their front gates for their potted plants, and the low, protective fencing beside the tracks as climbing frames for ivy or sweet peas."

"During the Montgomery bus boycott, we came together and remained unified for 381 days. It has never been done again. The Montgomery boycott became the model for human rights throughout the world." - Rosa Parks

MONTGOMERY
December 1st, 1955

What if? WHAT IF? What if Montgomery. as well as Alabama as a whole weren't seduced to destroy their bi-directional mode of transit (streetcars have no front or back), their entire systems, and hence never purchased a single bus? Bus segregation, well, had to start on a bus. Many people for years, since the introduction of gasoline run autobuses, were segregated and mistreated based upon skin type color. Rosa Parks merely was tired, tired from all the other times. She simply wanted to sit down. This was the time the cries of a few decades were heard.

So "What if?" Trolley cars were privately owned whose individual owners chose their own rules. Most did not discriminate. You have the fare, you get to ride. [This website does cover various streetcar discrimination cases.]

Busses continue to discriminate, not by where one chooses a seat - if there is one, but by each government, whether local or state. If you do have any public transportation even to go to the next town, it is because trains were stopped in favor for selling and serving automobiles with massive billions of dollars for highways. Governments today decide where its citizens are allowed, and not allowed to go. Many bus routes are lobbied, as governments can easily move them; decision-influenced by developers who do not want "certain" financially challenged people to get to their apartment buildings, special favors; like route special private school public bus only for children to ride, where public school children all ride with the general public. Then where one is allowed to shop and where it will take hours and several transfers to get anywhere to certain, especially in suburbs, the outlet and discount stores. Nature centers are prohibitive, as well as state parks. The end to segregation did not end in the 1950's. 90% to end "Bus" segregation is still upon us. Get to get on, but now where to go? Lots of jobs that the bus does not go to. Isolated. Opportunity done for if cannot get there. Just because one got into an automobile, did not end any segregation. All people want is freedom to choose where one goes, in the past private owners - today the local and state governments choose.

"Rosa Parks: In Her Own Words" - The Library of Congress

STILL LITTLE SERVICE: "Rosa Parks would have had a difficult time sitting on the front or back of a Montgomery bus as the new millennium arrived because the city basically dismantled its public bus system, which had mostly served blacks and poor people. The cuts were made at the same time that federal tax dollars boosted the construction of the region's extensive suburban highways. The changes in Montgomery and its metropolitan region took place amid growing racial geographic segregation and this was reflected in tensions between white and black members of the city council. City officials stated that their actions were fiscally necessary even as Montgomery received large federal transportation subsidies to fund renovation of non-transit improvements."

Cities are going, "Fare Free," as well as Washington D.C. This piece is focused on busses only, which again proves that people continue to look down upon busses, though congestion. Despite this piece, some congestion is removed - "Demand Response Vehicles" (Taxi, Lyft, Uber....), which, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, "Are the least efficient because they need to use fuel just to get to the passenger."
Cities that have and introduce Streetcars have a different outcome. People do leave their cars behind, and brick and mortar economy comes roaring back. Snobs? Yes. But busses pollute, especially their tires with PAHS and PPDS, killing and producing all animals with the ability to die from cancers. So snobbery to busses is YES to Streetcars, "The Only True Zero Carbon Emissions."

"The council also expanded bus service round-the-clock on several of the transit system's busiest routes to help late-night service workers who often rely on expensive ride-share services after Metrobus and Metrorail have closed."

"The vote is part of a nationwide movement toward free or reduced-fare transit that gained momentum during the pandemic, which highlighted the role of public buses in transporting essential workers and those who have no other alternatives. The measure also aligns with the city’s goals of increasing transit usage and removing vehicles from clogged city streets."

STATE OF MARYLAND'S TRANSIT SYSTEM ASSESSMENT & NEW VISION????

The MTA Commuter Buses make stops, even one or two blocks apart when in Washington D.C. Each line from each county that goes to Washington D.C. makes different stops there. This is the opposite from where the line originates. The commuter lines pass by, instead of creating one or at most two lines, making only a few stops more. There are huge towns and cities, like Upper Marlboro that are driven through, but not a single stop. Even Annapolis is by-passed. Except to Baltimore, every commuter line in eastern and southern Maryland goes to a METRO Subway station, yet still goes into Washington D.C.'s congested traffic. This makes no sense. Pick up many people where they live in far away counties, and bring them to closest Washington D.C. Subway station, like Suitland. Dedicated Streetcar lanes will enable people to no longer drive their cars to meeting places for commuter buses, and get to work and other activities quicker. More service makes more, not less usage. Allow people to have a life beyond 9 to 5 and every day of the week. Allow people to ride the train rails that are already go by their towns and cities. Allow freedom to move. Allow to reach places people want to get to. People can't even reach family members. Seniors and kids do not work, and yet no consideration regarding quality of life. End segregation. The name, "Commuter" says it all.

Of the cuts, 3 Routes cut completely. RTC claims that it is the lack of bus drivers. But that does not make sense when people still need service - SOMETHING instead of, "No Service For You, You, and You." Reno used to have streetcars. Perhaps people are wise to want those jobs instead....

RTC: ONE OF MANY REASONS FOR DRASTICALLY CUTTING BUS SERVICE AND ROUTES IS ADVOCATING FOR CARS: "While we experience a ridership increase from the economic recovery, continued employment provides people with sufficient income to buy and drive cars."

At first, "The Future!" and conclusion: build and use trams - streetcars. Carries more people at once, and saves oodles of labor - drivers and mechanics. Use BRT for highway suburbs.
Conclusion: build and use trams - streetcars. Tired trains and trams cannot be heated, thereby challenged to run in winter. Same hydroplane and roll-resistance issues as busses. Documented that the use of tires were because of tire manufacturer in that town or close proximity. Salespeople do make a difference - good or bad.

NEW JERSEY

"Murphy asked lawmakers Tuesday to approve a 2.5% non-marginal tax on all income earned by businesses making more than $10 million in annual net income. The so-called “corporate transit fee” would replace the recently expired corporate business tax surcharge, which added a 2.5% surtax on business profits above $1 million.
The new tax is expected to generate $818 million in revenue annually, though it’s expected to raise just over $1 billion this year because it will be applied retroactively to the first two quarters of 2024.

Only 600 businesses are expected to pay the new tax, compared to the roughly 3,100 that paid the old surcharge. But those who do will pay more because, unlike the old surcharge, the new tax will be levied on a larger tax base that includes the first $1 million of business profits. Revenue from the new transit fee would be dedicated by statute to NJ Transit. The money would help the agency meet the roughly $900 million fiscal cliff it faces in the fiscal year that begins in July 2026, but the statutory dedication means the money can be diverted at the whim of a future governor and Legislature.

"But the future of the service that currently runs Northeast Ohio's buses -- the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority -- is uncertain, with RTA manager of budgets Mike Daugherty recently declaring that it faces catastrophic revenue losses in the years to come. Earlier this year the RTA announced cuts in routes and raises in fees intended to deal with a gloomy financial forecast.

With the future of the Greater Cleveland's public transportation in doubt, we decided to take a look at the history of Northeast Ohio's trolleys, streetcars, and buses."

"The streetcar mode was selected over the LRT mode due to its compatibility with the City of Tempe's downtown atmosphere, smaller footprint, and its ability to run off-wire through its historic sections of the downtown area."
"In its first year, the Tempe Streetcar beat ridership expectations and is already on track for expansion.

Why it matters: The 3-mile streetcar route has provided a faster way to transport people through the busiest parts of Tempe, and its early success has created a powerful argument for expansion into Mesa."
A light rail was already built and running, but streetcar in original form is more popular.

In San Diego, ancillary solar and wind-making energy not enough to combat motor vehicle greenhouse gas emissions. WIDENING SIDEWALKS & STREETCARS ARE ANSWERS FOR SAN DIEGO: "San Diego has made enormous strides toward getting more of its electricity from renewable sources such as wind and solar in recent years. But according to the city's latest inventory of greenhouse gas emissions, that progress is being canceled out by the city's biggest source of pollution: cars and trucks.

The findings were buried in the appendix of a climate-monitoring report uploaded to the city's website in March. They underscore the need to decarbonize San Diego's transportation system and build dense, walkable neighborhoods (like Grantville) where more residents can get around without a car. The climate report found that emissions from the generation of electricity fell by an impressive 27% from 2020 through 2021. This was attributed to an increase in renewable energy purchases by both SDG&E and San Diego Community Power, a government-run nonprofit that began purchasing energy on behalf of homes and businesses in 2021.

While artistic improvisation is well expected, what is depicted is a streetcar, not a cable car. A cable car can only work with its cable connected in the middle of the two tracks, rotating underground. If this was done in Disney's time, the cable car would of been shown correctly with different hi-jinks, or would of been called, "Streetcar Chaos" as San Francisco has cable and streetcars.

This streetcar, with District of Columbia proposed entire system, needs dedicated lanes in order to truly work, not with cars, but replace automobiles. People want to move faster than automobiles, and streetcars can move Very fast.
Intended for communities in DC that are not adequately served by the existing Metro infrastructure, the streetcars will help to connect emerging neighborhoods, and allow for a more efficient, effective, and economical alternative to the maze of often confusing and unreliable bus routes running through the city.

Not "Dedicated" Streetcar Lanes defeats entire purpose of being a fast, on-time, massive people mover.

"D.C. Votes to Eliminate Metrobus Fares in Movement Toward Free Transit" - The Washington Post (December 6th, 2022)

Cities are going, "Fare Free," as well as Washington D.C. This piece is focused on busses only, which again proves that people continue to look down upon busses, though massive traffic congestion. This piece also did not report how much money is spent on collecting, counting money, fare boxes, repairs... Despite this piece, some congestion is removed - "Demand Response Vehicles" (Taxi, Lyft, Uber....), which, according to the U.S. Department of Energy, "Are the least efficient because they need to use fuel just to get to the passenger."
Cities that have and introduce Streetcars have a different outcome than with busses.

ADVOCACY FOR JACKSONVILLE STREETCARS:
"When we predict that Jacksonville will become the metropolis of the South, it is made upon the favorable surrounding conditions, based upon the history of the past with the corroborating facts of the present." - 1905 Jacksonville City Directory, Publisher's Remarks ....
"A drive down the streets of the urban core reveals that most of the city's historic walkable commercial districts have a direct connection with the now defunct streetcar system. This should help validate the nationwide push to invest in streetcar networks to serve as a catalyst for infill economic development.

In a quest to decide what Jacksonville wants to be, it may be time for this city to roll back the clock and restore what was once one of the South's most impressive mass transit systems." - Ennis Davis
PCT BUS -VERSUS- JACKSONVILLE STREETCAR
DIRECT COSTS: Acquiring and operating PCT busses. Buses must have similar capacity and frequency to the streetcars.
Tampa, Florida & Little Rock, Arkansas Streetcar Birney Example: Streetcar capacity carries 90 passengers. PCT bus capacity is 30 passengers. 7 Streetcars serving Riverside equals 21 busses.
"Imagine the crowds that pack Everbank Field, the baseball grounds, arena, Landing, Art Walk, Riverwalk, or the TU Center, and on a line that extends from the Sports District to Park and King in Riverside, 7 streetcars doing the work of 21 buses. If JTA goes ahead with hybrid engines on the PCT'S the sticker price is a tad over $625,000 dollars a copy. A brand new heritage Birney Streetcar will run about $1,200,000 each. So for 21 PCT buses? CHA CHING! $13,125,000 dollars worth of "savings." The 7 streetcars? $8,400,000 pretty close to half as much. Saving: $4,725,000."

OPPORTUNITY COSTS
Additionally saving on "Onboard Personnel" labor: bus drivers [Two thirds of total cost?] Break down cost for 21 drivers, + two shifts (minimum) and you'll get 42 bus drivers (not counting substitute drivers). Streetcar Motormen/women need is 14. "BIG SAVINGS JACKSONVILLE...HUGE. Keep on trackin' Juice fans."

"Guesstimating that about one third of JTA'S budget is for mass transit, with 180 vehicles, one can assume that the average cost of operating a {a single} JTA bus is $185,000 dollars per year. This was calculated dividing JTA'S budget into thirds and dividing by the number of buses operated. Imagine blowing $3,885,000 annually for a fake {streetcar}. So let's say the cursed PCT'S run to the FTA maximum of 12 years {lifespan}, we'd drop $46,620,000 for a plastic "imitation trolley." Oh the savings just keep mounting. Meanwhile in Tampa, the TECO streetcar line operates 11 streetcars cars for 2,600,000 a year or about $236,000 annually per car. It would take 33 faux trolley buses to equal the same carrying capacity. In the same 12 year period one could expect JTA would spend $18,000,000 for real streetcars. Fleet Savings? $28,620,000 (It's that flushing sound a bus makes)

LACK OF PROBATIVE VALUE
The cost of money rises exponentially due to inflation with procrastination. The other opportunity cost would be the delay of benefits to the city that would come from having a streetcar. I will not attempt to quantify them in this posting, but it is something of which to be aware.
Combining the direct and opportunity costs leads to a cost of the twelve year PCT operation of over $48,645,000 million.

The Streetcar will produce two main types of benefits — ridership benefits and economic development benefits. The PCT will not. Ridership on the PCT bus will be lower than it would be on a streetcar. Route legibility of a bus route is worse than a streetcar. Unlike a bus, someone unfamiliar with a streetcar route can see the tracks and know where the line goes. People like to know where they are going and national statistical data on streetcar verses bus ridership bear this out.

Additionally, PCT busses cannot approach streetcar performance - smooth rides! "Mode-neutrality presumes that a transit rider will exhibit no preference for rail over buses. This is not the case. Many visitors to New York or Chicago will take the subway or the 'EL,' but will not ride a bus to get around."
"Streetcars were a common sight in U.S. cities at the beginning of the 20th century, but by the 1960s, they had been wiped out, usually replaced by buses deemed cheaper to operate and more comfortable. More than a half-century after streetcars were abandoned and burned, several U.S. cities are working to revive them. Why? Because of their uncanny ability to rapidly transform once-decrepit neighborhoods into economic powerhouses by attracting billions of dollars of Transit Oriented Development (TOD) within walking distance of their routes."

'Over the next 20 years we’re going to have 700,000 new residents. That’s almost the populations of Orlando and Miami combined. "Chicago is left with these massive transit deserts that force people to drive, all while limiting economic activity, ad perpetuating inequality. But none of this is a secret. the city recognized that this would be a problem back in 1923, and they tried to build a north-south rapid transit routes three separate times then. But clearly it has not worked out. [Shares why the busses failed. Sound familiar?] Solution: Add larger Circle line Loop! NOT! Still about Streetcars!
Makes Case for Streetcar return in Chicago ("L" never meant to serve neighborhoods) "Buses are just a social service, that we are going to hand out"

"Krause's non-profit Chicago Streetcar Renaissance proposes a network of six routes, only going where the ridership is very high along the entire route – essentially upgrading the busiest bus corridors in the city, where streetcar operation can be demonstrated to be faster and more cost-effective. The plan links major destinations for the first time by transit and makes vital last-mile connections between commuter rail stations and the central business district (CBD). Rather than going where there’s leftover road space, the Chicago streetcar would go where it does the most good: where demand is highest and where the congestion is worst."

The Saint Charles Line is the continuously operated street railway line not just in the United States, but in the world. Birthed in 1835, a The Carrollton Line of the N.O. & Carrollton Railroad was powered by steam engine, horse, and mule. In 1893 electrification came about [Leo Daft] and has streetcars original to this route that are well over 100 years old in use today. There are areas of the St. Charles route that is grass covered around the rails.

New Orleans is building its streetcar system on the United States based upon longest continuously running streetcar line, The Saint Charles. New Orleans Streetcar System is currently at 5 routes.

It was simple - even of ease, to physically move about Baltimore city - on streetcars:

"Segregationist values, notions that blacks should be separated and subordinate, prevailed throughout the country in these turn-of-the-century years, and Baltimore whites deemed the emerging black community of Old West Baltimore a tolerable, even useful city neighborhood. Residents were close enough to be in the employ of affluent whites who still resided downtown, in Bolton Hill, or near Harlem Square, and a mere street car ride from the more spacious northern sections."

Baltimore has for decades has vied for large events. Baltimore used to vie, and have political party conventions. Baltimore, with Washington D.C. has vied many times now for Summer Olympics, to no avail. Los Angeles is a multi-time Olympic City. Los Angeles understands that in order to be a world class city, it direly needs a streetcar system to add to their subway system; and they are working diligently to make it reality for 2028. In order for Baltimore to reap billions, yes Billons that Portland, Kansas City, and Tampa Bay are pouring in by brick and mortar, Baltimore must go Streetcar full throttle. All neighborhoods need the economic and social stabilization brick and mortar businesses streetcars create. And then, vie for The Olympics.

Throughout the entire United States, train routes used to stop in every little town, just like depicted in television hit, "Petticoat Junction." Today, routes like these continue to run in Europe, using their genius timetable methods in tradition to have the shortest transfer wait time, hence the best to keep trains full.

Kansas City has already extended mentioned line, built, and opened other streetcar routes.

As was the experience in Roland Park, the streetcar was considered the most reliable way of getting downtown and back in spite of the increasing popularity of the automobile.
Initially, a railroad along Charles Street, known as the 'Charles Street Line,' began operation in 1862. The No. 11 streetcar replaced that operation. The Baltimore light rail was built for commuters into Baltimore City and a way to go to Thurgood Marshall BWI Airport. It is meant for suburbanites to travel to work, to airport, and sports and other entertainment events. The stops are near few residential homes, and therefore promotes driving to the stops, with widespread parking areas. Most residents of Baltimore City do not ride this limited-stop route as not only do they not live anywhere near the few stops, but due to the limited placement of stops in the first place. The buses do not meet the light-rail and vice-versa, so patience of at least an hour is necessary. Bring necessary weather-condition need for optimum comfort in waiting.

Kansas City Streetcar Authority executive director Tom Gerend shares how Streetcars earn their keep by being revenue streams generated by tax districts:
“We have a taxing jurisdiction where we collect a fare indirectly off the economic activity. People ride our system: they shop at businesses, they go to restaurants, they stay in hotels. The more people we move, the greater the economic impact. And we get to capture some of that through an indirect fare on those economic transactions in a way that creates this sort of symbiotic relationship."

Kansas City interviews 2 business owners. Keith Novorr, owner of Michael's (a Clothier) is in great support, and wants there to more streetcar routes for more people to have such rich transit, as it is bringing people not only out of their cars, but not even purchasing an automobile. Sue Burke, President of Kansas City Air Filter Company worries about sales, and a product-based business is not geared to service-oriented wealth the streetcar is bringing. [This is great opportunity to share that deliveries can be made on streetcars, and in future, streetcars made to handle large volumes of items over longer distances.

"It's the right time for Omaha to support a streetcar."

"It’s the right time for Omaha to support a streetcar. “Omaha is rapidly developing from the riverfront to the University of Nebraska Medical Center. A streetcar will lead to additional development of our core which benefits the entire city. Mutual of Omaha’s plan to build a new downtown headquarters is the first example of what is possible and why now is the time. The momentum we have to forever change our urban core is undeniable.” - Mayor Jean Stothert

"The streetcar provides access to jobs, housing, attractions, entertainment and recreation, higher education institutions, and health care. It will allow residents, employees, and visitors to move into, out of, and around the downtown and midtown core, limiting the need to drive between destinations and search for parking. And, it will increase the level of new development along the route, projected at $3 billion over the next 15 years and $5 billion in 30 years."

It's been in newspapers for A FEW YEARS! No one says, "Highway! Well I don't know. NO TAXPAYER MONEY! NONE AT ALL!"
KEEP GOING OMAHA. YOU WILL BREATHE WELL, AND THEY WILL BE FINALLY - ASHAMED. STATE OF NEBRASKA, GET OUT OT OMAHA'S WAY.

"We should all be sitting down together and talking about big things," Linehan said. "We shouldn't have state senators reading about in the paper before anybody's given a heads up of what's coming."

A number of Linehan's streetcar bills have been referred to the unicameral's Urban Affairs Committee.

LB389 would restrict the use of tax-increment financing, a tool used to pay for the project. LB691 would require the city or owner of a fixed rail or streetcar system to pay project-related costs for utilities. LB693 would require an authority under the Community Development Law to pay project-related costs for utility work for a fixed rail or streetcar system.

"I love the idea of a streetcar," Linehan said. "It's how we're paying for it that concerns me."

A spokesperson for Jean Stothert says the mayor met with State Sen. Linehan for two hours earlier this month.

"The City is confident in the streetcar project," spokesperson Carrie Murphy said in a written statement on Friday.

AMAZING! STATE WANTS TO ADD TO OMAHA CITY'S SELF-SUFFICIENT BUDGET TO EXPAND STREETCAR ROUTE - FOR FINANCIALLY CHALLENGED - FIRST!!

"The city says the streetcar will pay for itself with a route from midtown to downtown -- meaning BECAUSE A STRETCAR BOOSTS THE VALUES OF WHAT IT IT NEAR, A NUMBER OF BUSINESES WILL WANT TO BUILD NEXT TO IT TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE BENEFITS {OF EYEBALLS BEING RIGHT ON A FIXED ROUTE - STREETCAR PROXIMITY}.

Up to now, we've seen the route, essentially going down Farnam westbound and Harney eastbound, up 10th Street in the Old Market up to the CHI Health Center, with a loop around there -- while allowing options for expansion. State Senator Justin Wayne wants the line to extend. to the airport, which would go north on 19th Street, over to 16th and up to Fort Street, then straight to Eppley, mostly along neighborhoods. Remember, the legislature has already committed $400 million in Rescue Plan money to transform North Omaha. Organizers believe this is a logical next step while tying the plan to affordable housing.

“First, get public transit into an area that needs it the most,” Wayne said. “Invest in an area that we've already said is an economic development goldmine by putting dollars there last year. Three, create a sustainable affordable housing solution because the state can’t continue to pick up the tab.”

At least two members of Mayor Stothert's Economic Development Team also spoke in support of the plan before the appropriations committee Friday afternoon. LB477 would earmark that $100 million from the state to build the streetcar line to Eppley, while also assigning AFFORDABLE HOUSING BENCHMARKS along the route."

NEW YORK

Ringing Bells

New York City long ago decided that one train station was enough, and demolished Pennsylvania Train Station to build Madison Square Gardens. New York City long regrets that decision, and ended up with an underground Pennsylvania Train Station.
Today, Pennsylvania Station is at full capacity. Train routes are being built to go to Grand Central Station, like The Long Island Railroad. New York well knows that the future is rail, and is well-forward thinking. New York is also expanding train freight lines. New York knows that reducing trucks equals them no longer ruining their roads.

The construction of Interstates 77, 85 and 277 spliced historically Black neighborhoods on the west side and cut off residents from amenities like grocery stores. Even the name Uptown shows how the city was planned in a way that was not equitable.

The 95-mile section of track will be called the S-line corridor, designed to link Washington, D.C., to Charlotte and Atlanta. {Railroad routes went through every little town, and now it is returning.}

Rebecca Salmon, Mayor of Sanford, is excited about what the return of the railroad could mean for her city, which has deep roots in the railroad industry, even deriving its name from a civil engineer with the railroad.

'You can see these railroad tracks connected our town together,' Salmon said. 'Building on our history, knowing where we came from — a project like this fits so well with building on top of what made us so strong.'

The vehicle was delivered by truck this morning, and unloaded onto the tracks at the Portland Streetcar maintenance facility. The design is based on streetcars built by Skoda in the Czech Republic, but updated to use parts from US suppliers and to meet the needs of US-based customers."

"In 1929 two former Rhode Island Company Trolley Cars were retired and sold off after being used in Woonsocket, RI. These cars were then set up as a diner, called the Purple Cat, which expanded sometime after. This expansion added a structure around the cars covering them up from view. Now the diner has been closed for years and the structure is being torn down. This demolition uncovered the cars after about 75 years. The cars are planned to be saved and repurposed as part of an antique shop on the former diner site. This video shows the exposed cars as well as demolition work that is currently in progress."

"Tom Shelton, a senior program manager with NCTCOG, said the funding became available once it became clear that the Love Field connector, which was envisioned as a way to move people from the DART station to the airport terminal, was going nowhere. Shelton and others with the council approached the city to suggest they put the money toward streetcars.
'It's fair to say the city of Dallas' priorities have changed,' he said. 'They have a real commitment to a streetcar network and system.'"

Dallas City Council found after many options, that expanding streetcar routes is the answer to profitable rail transport.

By the late 1890s, Rutland, Bennington, Brattleboro, Bellows Falls and Springfield all had streetcar systems with some carrying freight as well as passengers. The Bennington area trolleys developed into a large interconnected system across state lines to both New York, Massachusetts and eventually even Connecticut."

MILWAUKEE
Mayor Tom Barrett of Milwaukee on the Streetcar:
"I'm Betting on the Future of This City"

"This is part of a bigger thing that's going on here. It's about the future of this city and what your view is about the future of this city.

Barrett pointed to, 'The Young and the Restless and the Nation’s Cities,' a study by City Observatory that argues that millennials are moving to cities and spurring economic growth and revitalizing urban areas. Barrett wants to attract and keep these young professionals with, among other things, a strong public transit system. He argues that cash-strapped new grads will be saddled with student debt, opt to delay owning a home in favor of renting, and will want to take transit instead of owning or depending on a car.

Milwaukee's in the middle of the largest 51 cities in terms of young professionals who live in or near Downtown, according to City Observatory. Barrett took a look at the cities above and below Milwaukee and noticed something interesting—every city with a higher concentration of young professionals Downtown had a streetcar or light-rail system in the ground or in the works.

"I'm betting on the future of this city and betting on the young people to come and to stay." - Mayor Barrett

"'Would I have preferred that we built the 13-mile regional system we were planning in 1996?,' said Ald. Robert Bauman, a streetcar supporter. 'You bet. No question about it. By now it would be up and running for almost 10 years. We'd probably be debating extensions to the airport, extensions into Waukesha County.'" (2015)

THE HOP: RECOVERING FROM PANDEMIC FACTS -Operational Costs:
"There are no transit systems in the United States that make a direct profit and it is misguided to evaluate the effectiveness of a transit system based on this measure. Transit is a municipal service intended to improve the mobility of its citizens, particularly those that do not have access to other forms of transportation. Fiscal benefits of transit, particularly rail-based transit, are realized indirectly by attracting developers, employers, employees, residents, and visitors that contribute to the tax base and general attractiveness of the City.
Of the 12 modern streetcar systems in the United States, 7 charge fares and recover, on average, 8% of operating costs. While The Hop does not currently charge a fare, The Hop recovers approximately 30% of annual operating costs through sponsorship/advertising and federal grant revenues based on the 2020 operating budget.
Under State Statute 85.20, The Hop is the only transit system in Wisconsin that is not eligible for state funding under the Wisconsin Urban Mass Transit Operating assistance program. If The Hop were eligible for state funding under this program, approximately 70%-75% of annual operating costs would be recovered through non-City sources."
