NOISE POLLUTION ~~~~~~~~~~

thephantomtollbooth-noise.jpg
"THE PHANTOM TOLLBOOTH"

"Noise" - "The Phantom Tollbooth"

"Heavy decibels are playing on my guitar
We got vibrations coming up from the floor
We're just listening to the rock that's giving too much noise
Are you deaf? - You want to hear some more?" - AC/DC

Noise Pollution has been going on for well over a century. Since the industrial revolution at work, and everyday - from weedwackers and lawn mowers to dirt bikes and motorcycles, to cars, busses, and trucks; our ears have taken the brunt of the decibels, making us lose our hearing, sometimes slowly, sometimes completely in a matter of two months.

Other terms used for "Noise Pollution" are, "Aural Pollution" and "Traffic Pollution."

NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF HEALTH
☸ Approximately 15% of American adults (37.5 million) aged 18 and over report some trouble hearing.
Men are almost twice as likely as women to have hearing loss among adults aged 20-69.
One in eight people in the United States (13 percent, or 30 million) aged 12 years or older has hearing loss in both ears, based on standard hearing examinations.
☸ Roughly 10 percent of the U.S. adult population, or about 25 million Americans, has experienced tinnitus lasting at least five minutes in the past year.
☸ As of December 2019, approximately 736,900 cochlear implants have been implanted worldwide. In the United States, roughly 118,100 devices have been implanted in adults and 65,000 in children.
5 out of 6 children experience an ear infection (otitis media) by the time they are 3 years old.

WHAT ARE THE 4 TYPES OF NOISE?

Speaker 1

CONTINUOUS NOISE = Loud sound that is produced - running without interruption. For example: by machinery, anything that a generator is used for, especially lights, floodlights.... night construction... ENTIRELY MAN-MADE.

Speaker 1

INTERMITTENT NOISE = A mix of relatively quiet and noisy periods. Power tools and mowers are often used this way. "Surprise!" sound. ENTIRELY MAN-MADE.

Speaker 1

IMPULSIVE NOISE = IMPACT NOISE = Very short burst of loud noise which lasts for less than one second. ENTIRELY MAN-MADE.

Speaker 1

LOW-FREQUENCY NOISE = Usually continuous sound that is often not as much heard as felt through vibrations. Affects health of all animals, including human beings. ENTIRELY MAN-MADE.

"Low frequency noise, the frequency range from about 10 Hz to 200 Hz, has been recognized as a special environmental noise problem, particularly to sensitive people in their homes. Conventional methods of assessing annoyance, typically based on A-weighted equivalent level, are inadequate for low frequency noise and lead to incorrect decisions by regulatory authorities."

NOISE POLLUTION
wolfgangbabischnoisehealth2014.jpg
Wolfgang Babisch ~ Noise Health (2014)

"To lower the price of hearing aids and expand access, President Biden’s Executive Order on Promoting Competition in the American Economy called on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to make hearing aids available over the counter, without a prescription. That is now reality. Starting today, hearings aids are now on store shelves across the country>—for thousands of dollars less than they previously cost."
This means, that though the price may have fallen, people who cannot purchase "over the counter" as insurance tells them that they will not/no longer cover hearing aids, will go without. Another thing that people must now find charity, and/or beg for.

"We estimated that 104 million individuals had/{have} annual LEQ(24) levels > 70 dBA (equivalent to a continuous average exposure level of >70 dBA over 24 hr) in 2013 and were/{are} at risk of noise-induced hearing loss. Tens of millions more may be at risk of heart disease, and other noise-related health effects. Direct regulation, altering the informational environment, and altering the built environment are the least costly, most logistically feasible, and most effective noise reduction interventions."

IN CONTRAST: OTHER COUNTRIES AND PROVIDENCES HAVE PLANS TO NOT ONLY COMBAT NOISE POLLUTION, BUT TOGETHER WITH AIR POLLUTION

"A healthy acoustic environment is more than simply the absence of unwanted sound.

The noise action plan for Wales, which we are required to review and update every five years, must have a broader focus than simply clamping down on the decibels. We need to create appropriate soundscapes, meaning the right acoustic environment in the right time and place. The towns and cities, in which most of us live, serve us in a variety of ways, and should therefore contain a variety of soundscapes appropriate to the land use. There should not be a one-size-fits-all urban soundscape, which we experience wherever we go, any more than every street and building should look alike.

Over the coming years, I expect public bodies in Wales to start thinking less in terms of pure noise mitigation and more in terms of creating healthier soundscapes for our communities. In addition, wherever air and noise pollution are both present and their sources are the same or related, they should be considered together rather than as separate problems. Air and noise pollution are both airborne pollutants, which can have a combined effect on the public’s health and, in many situations, they can be tackled to greatest effect through shared solutions."

STOCK CAR RACING & DRAG RACING

"Stock car racing is loud. Many fans and drivers like it that way. “Noise is part of NASCAR,” we are often told. We get it. In fact, efforts to reduce the noise in the 1970's by installing mufflers were quickly abandoned because the quiet cars were unpopular with racing teams and spectators alike. The problem is that repeated exposure to noise comes with consequences—permanent and irreversible consequences like hearing loss and ringing in the ears (tinnitus)."

ATHLETE COMPETITION CONDITIONS

During Artistic Gymnastics team competition, Frederick Richards and Stephen Nod turned to each other, placed their large hands on their ears and exclaimed ah-hu.. Stephen Nedoroscik an Frederick Richards attempt to block out noise pollution

On the streets of Paris in the 2024 Olympics, because of the crowd and motor vehicles (motorcycles and suv's), the road-race cyclists could not hear instructions of their team captains (ride as team even for singles), so they wrote on large water cups instructions.

"It was so loud. "It was so loud..... iI guess I am used to it..." Mondo Duplantis for Sweden, High Jump. Monday, August 5th, 2024 PRI OLYMPICS 2024.

"'I tried to clear my thoughts as much as I could,' he said of the momentous reception he received from the stands. 'The crowd was going crazy. It was so loud in there, it sounded like an American football game. I have a little bit of experience being in a 100,000-capacity stadium, but I was never the centre of attention. [I was] just trying to channel the energy everybody was giving me, and they were giving me a lot of it. It worked out.'"

"NOISE ALONE CAN DISRUPT SPECIES INTERACTIONS"
"Species intolerant of noise may suffer from not only exclusion from noisy habitats that might be otherwise suitable, but also higher rates of nest predation relative to species inhabiting noisy areas. If this phenomenon is common to noisy environments, it may help explain the high degree of success among urban-adapted species and the homogenization of avian communities in and around human-altered habitats. Perhaps more noteworthy, however, is that noise alone can disrupt species interactions." [Page 5]

SHIPS HURT - STRESS, DEAFEN AND DISTRUPT DOLPHINS AND WHALES' ECHOLOCATION
"Many marine species rely on sound to navigate, find prey, avoid predators and communicate with each other. But these behaviors can be disrupted by human-caused noise from sources such as commercial shipping, seismic surveys, oil exploration and military sonar. For many marine mammals, ocean noise (also known as noise pollution) can disturb feeding, resting and breeding behaviors, and can cause hearing loss, physical injury and chronic stress. Noise pollution can also lead to beaching and can mask the sounds of oncoming ships, resulting in potentially fatal ship strikes. ....
Dolphins increased the volume and duration of their calls to one another in noisy areas and were less able to cooperate with each other on tasks when exposed to more noise. Basically, the dolphins had to shout to one another in order to communicate. While scientists already knew that noise pollution has a negative impact on a variety of marine animals, this study showed for the first time how noise pollution impacts animals’ abilities to cooperate and work with one another. Scientists now believe major port areas, like Los Angeles or Boston, are experiencing a dearth of dolphins because the regions have become too loud for them to safely communicate. ....
Ships provide the most pervasive source of anthropogenic or human-caused noise in the ocean, especially in the form of low-frequency noise from engines and propellers. Shipping noise has doubled each decade since 1960 when it was first measured. This increase has been seen even in the most remote areas of the world, including the Arctic, which has experienced even higher increases in noise levels. ....
When ship traffic off the northeastern United States was all but stopped after the attacks on September 11, 2001, North Atlantic right whales displayed a sharp decrease in stress-related hormones. Similarly, when the world came to a halt due to the COVID-19 pandemic, international shipping declined by a fifth in just a few months, resulting in a decrease of about a quarter of the noise in our seas. As one outcome, orcas in Scotland and Canada were found closer to shore. A complete absence of cruise ships in 2020 in Glacier Bay, Alaska, enabled researchers to gather data on the implications of quieter seas for humpback whales and harbor seals."

"Law, S-3131/A-4686, sets limits on the permissible volume of sound emanating from motor vehicles to define “nuisance motor vehicles,” commonly referred to as 'boom cars.' Communities have been adversely affected by the loud music from 'boom parties,' where large gatherings of people and their cars blast music from massive speaker systems, the law’s sponsors said. The vibrations from the music affects residents miles away, during weekdays and the weekend and late into the night.

'The noise from these boom parties can be an assault on the quality of life in residential communities at all hours of the day and night,' Scutari said. 'This law sets reasonable standards that allow local enforcement officials to limit the volume of music emanating from motor vehicles.' A noise violation for a nuisance motor vehicle is defined as the operation of a sound system that is plainly audible at a distance of 50 feet or more from the vehicle."
