Chesapeake Bay Memorial Bridge Related Nature Information for MDTA

"347% more fuel is required to move a ton of goods in heavy trucks than is required to move the same goods by rail. Freeways provide an enormous subsidy to encourage truck shipments and discourage the inherently more efficient rail shipments. The squandering of fossil fuels caused the Director of the U.S. Geological Survey to state: 'In the United States, we have used more mineral fuels during the last 30 years than all the people of the world used previously. This enormous consumption will have to be doubled just to meet the needs of the people now living in the United States through the remainder of their lifetimes.'"

Here we will highlight the key issues of the campaign to make visitors to our site familiar with our position.

For example, if we are campaigning for reduced destruction of the environment, we might display some relevant pictures or mention interesting statistics.

"Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances (PFAs) are human-made chemicals used in carpeting, stain and water-resistant fabrics, cleaning products, paint, cookware, food packaging, and firefighting foam. They are found in the Chesapeake region in soil, surface water, groundwater, and seafood.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) finds that exposure to these chemicals at certain levels can be dangerous for babies' development during pregnancy or breastfeeding, and also increases risk of cancer, and damage to the immune system and organs."
Ban Tires? "Monsanto (1986) hid its knowledge that 6PPD is highly toxic to steelhead, blue gill, daphnia, fathead minnows, and toxic to rats. In 2004, bioaccumulation factors: 5, 6 and for 6PPD degradation products: Japanese rice fish, Carp (Cyprinus carpio)... Rabbits.... "Tian et al (2020) discovered that even diluting road runoff down to 5%, 6PPD was lethal to Coho salmon within 24 hours." ...

Controlling pollution is a major environmental issue.

Rubber industry workers study: "A large number of studies have been conducted on the rubber industries in Canada, China, Finland, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the USA. Workers employed in the industry before 1950 have a high risk of bladder cancer, probably associated with exposure to aromatic amines. Leukaemias have been associated with exposure to solvents and with employment in back processing, tyre curing, synthetic rubber production and vulcanization. Excess mortality from lymphomas has been noted among workers exposed to solvents in such departments as footwear and in tyre plants. Other cancers, including those of the lung, renal tract, stomach, pancreas, oesophagus, liver, skin, colon, larynx and brain, have been reported as occurring in excess in various product areas and departments, but no consistent excess of any of these cancers is seen across the various studies. - International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) (1987)

Above are several hazardous smokestacks.

"It's like a preservative for tires, similar to how food preservatives keep food from spoiling too quickly, 6PPD helps tires last by protecting them from ground-level ozone.

Ozone, a gas created when pollutants emitted by cars and other chemical sources react in the sunlight, breaks the bonds holding the tire together. 6PPD helps by reacting with ozone before it can react with the tire rubber, sparing the tires. But when 6PPD reacts with ozone , the researchers found that it was transformed into multiple chemicals , including 6PPD-quinone (pronounced "kwih-known"), the toxic chemical that is responsible for killing the salmon ."
"EXTINCTION CRISIS" 1 in 5 reptiles face extinction.
Turtles survived dinosaur time, but not us humans. 21% of all Turtles. 1829 different species of Turtles face extinction. "If all threatened reptiles would disappear, the would would lose a combined 15 billion years of evolutionarily history...."
"It'll take a big contribution by governments to change the trajectory we are on. One of the reptiles most at risk is turtles, with 60% of the turtles species facing extinction, and a need of targeted conservation efforts." Scott Smith is a wildlife ecologist for Maryland Department of Natural Resources. Surveys Wood Turtles. All can find are females. Healthy is 50/50 gender population....

"One of the concerns about losing biodiversity is that nearly all of our medicines, all of our foods, come from species. So as we lose species, we potentially lose a cure to cancer."
