HOW COAL IS MADE

Burning a lump of coal. How coal is intertwined in our moment by moment lives. We enjoy light at night, electricity for unlimited needs, and heat and cooling home environment. And Maryland still uses coal reserves.

West Virginia is a land-locked state, second only to Wyoming mine coal producer. West Virginia mostly exports their coal through Norfolk, Virginia and Baltimore, Maryland's ports to the world. When should Baltimore say, "No more." What is the date and time? When do we stop being hypocrites? With the multi uses of coal, carcinogen family Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHS), found in coal tar and coal ash, used as sealant and continues to be found due to reusing concrete/asphalt/cement. [What is left from incineration that is toxic waste and Per and Polyfluorinated Substances (PFAS).]

"What is coal tar and coal-tar pitch?

Coal tar is a byproduct of the coking, liquefaction or gasification of coal. Coal-tar pitch is the residue that remains after the distillation of coal tar, that is, the thick black liquid remaining after various oils are removed from coal tar for use in the manufacture of industrial and consumer products. Coal-tar pitch is separated, or "refined", into 12 grades of viscosity. The most viscous grade, RT-12, is used in coal-tar-based sealcoat. The primary use of coal-tar pitch is in electrode manufacturing for the aluminum industry and for steel arc furnaces.

What are PAHs?

PAHs are a group of chemicals created by heating or burning material that contains carbon. There are many sources of PAHs to the environment, representing a wide range of PAHs concentrations, including asphalt (2-9 milligrams per kilogram, or mg/kg), tire particles (84 mg/kg), used motor oil (730 mg/kg), and coal-tar-based sealcoat (34,000-202,000 mg/kg). PAHs cause cancer, mutations, birth defects, and/or death in fish, wildlife, and invertebrates. Several PAHs are photoactivated, meaning that their toxic effects are greatly intensified when exposed to sunlight. The EPA has classified seven PAHs as probable human carcinogens, and 16 PAHs as Priority Pollutants."

Port of Baltimore - Maryland Manual

Bowleys Quarters: "RAW: Crews Implode Former C.P. Crane Power Plant in Baltimore County": Morning August 19th, 2022 Crews Decommissioned C.P. Crane power plant in Bowleys Quarters in a planned implosion. Uncut Version

"Maryland: 19 miles southeast of Washington, D.C., at the Brandywine landfill in Prince George’s County, ash from three NRG coal plants has contaminated groundwater with unsafe levels of at least eight pollutants, including lithium at more than 200 times above safe levels, and molybdenum (which can damage the kidney and liver) at more than 100 times higher than safe levels. The contaminated groundwater at this site is now feeding into and polluting local streams. ....

The researchers of this report could not determine the safety of drinking water near the coal ash dumps analyzed in this study because power companies are not required to test private drinking water wells. However, the report contains examples of several well-documented instances of residential tap water contaminated by coal ash. For example: ....
At a coal ash landfill in Gambrills, Maryland, ash dumped in an old sand and gravel quarry caused unsafe levels of arsenic, beryllium, lithium, and other pollutants in multiple residential wells. Constellation Energy settled a lawsuit with impacted residents for $54 million.
Additional examples of contamination of residential drinking water outlined in the report are in Indiana, Illinois, Maryland, Pennsylvania, Tennessee and Wisconsin and North Carolina."

WEST VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND SITTING ON A COAL CAR

* Baltimore, the state's largest city and one of the 20 largest ports in the nation, handles both coal and petroleum products.
* Maryland's renewable energy resources—hydropower, solar, wind, and biomass—are distributed widely across the state. Maryland is the seventh most densely populated state in the nation with 636 people per square mile.

* Maryland consumes about five times more energy than it produces.

"In late 2020, a study by researchers from the University of California, San Diego, found over 80% of 39 projects that have sought to commercialize carbon capture and storage ended in failure. The study cited lack of technological readiness as a top factor. Critics say carbon capture would require more energy to power the equipment, resulting in more air pollution because the technology can only catch a portion of the carbon emitted by a facility."
