Until recent history, people walked long distances, for necessity. People carried things - while walking. There was no need for gyms, because exercise was a natural part of life, instead of a chore today. The coat of an automobile goes well beyond the cost of the actual vehicle. Many find themselves declaring bankruptcy with repairs and still hefty cost owed through loan. Generations "Y" (Millennial) and "Z" don't want to even own them, not even obtaining driver's licenses.

2022: Maryland has the 7th most confrontational - most road rage: 89.29% out of 100%, an A-. Goal is 0%, at least "F" range.

WHY IS THE STATE OF MARYLAND SO INVESTED IN AUTOMOBILES, AND NOT TRUE PUBLIC TRANSIT?

"Travel Scotland Without A Car Guide" - Out About Scotland

"Transport Minister, Jenny Gilruth, hailed the introduction of the low emission zones (LEZs) as a 'truly significant public health moment for Scotland.' Experts say air pollution is causing new lung conditions like lung cancer and worsening existing conditions like asthma and COPD."

"It's not just the pandemic that gave the need for more space on the roads, either. This is also a huge win for the preservation of Edinburgh’s medieval Old Town that doubles as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cutting out the endless droves of beeping taxis and slugging cars helps reverse some of the damage caused by tourism. It also preserves the historic character and integrity of the area. After all, it’s much easier to imagine what 12th century Edinburgh must’ve been like without the distraction of modern vehicles."

"It used to look like this - a parking lot with 75 cars parked here. The City Council wanted this to be a nice entrance to the city center. So the City Council proposed to take away like 60, so 15 left. And then the merchants here {points on map} said, 'No! We want them all gone because we're right off the pedestrianized zone where sales are better.'"

HOW BUYING AN AUTOMOBILE ACTUALLY MAKES YOU POOR

Paying for Shelter and Automobile = Neither "Poverty, Politics, and Profit" - "Frontline" & NPR - PBS (2020)

"Nothing you will do in your lifetime, realistically, will waste more money than buying a new car."

"Transportation costs range from 17.1 percent in the Northeast to 20.8 percent in the South, where 54 percent of African Americans now reside. The nation's poorest families spend more than 40 percent of their take home pay on transportation. Households that earned less than $20,000 saw their transportation expenses increase by 36.5 percent between 1992 and 2000. Compare this to households with incomes of $70,000 and above, who only spent 16.7 percent more in 2000 than they did in 1992.

High transportation costs can have a significant effect on families’ long-term financial outlooks. Spending on vehicles erodes wealth, while spending in the other major household category—housing—can build it. For example, over ten years, for every $10,000 invested in a home, the homeowner can get a return of over $4,730 in equity. For every $10,000 invested in an automobile, a car owner receives equity of less than $1,000, just $910. Automobile loans are the largest category of household debt outside of home mortgages, and such debt obligations can stand in the way of qualifying for a mortgage."

Whether you buy new or used, there's more to the cost of your vehicle than purchase price. The CAA Driving Costs Calculator helps build a better understanding of all new or used (gas, hybrid, and electrical battery) purchases, and ongoing costs of owning a vehicle.

Sustainable Transportation
Transporting via environmentally friendly and economical choices, such as active transportation (walking, biking, or carpooling), or public transportation. Public transportation offers cost-effective and environmentally friendly way to travel. [May have to advocate for a little bit of highway budget for "people-mover" service, not "car-mover."] According to Canadian Urban Transit Association (CUTA), every time you use public transit instead of driving, you generate approximately 65% less greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.

"Gas is the second highest car expense, accounting for about a fifth of operating and ownership costs. Having a fuel efficient vehicle can reduce the amount of money spent on gas, and help the environment too. Use Natural Resources Canada list of the most fuel efficient vehicles by category as a benchmark when in the market for a new vehicle. For each class, the most fuel-efficient conventional vehicle and the most efficient electric vehicle (where applicable) are recognized."

"Higher interest rates have hit as automakers double down on pricier models, as the average price for a new car hit $48,008 in March."

National ER wait times average 2.5 hours, but D.C. is more than double with a 5.5-hour average ER waiting time. Compare that to the fastest ER in North Dakota at 108 minutes."

HEAT & CLIMATE CRISIS CHALLENGES

Tumbling
Spring, Summer, & Fall
Heat and heat waves interferes with automobile/truck... operation, forcing vehicle to work harder. Heat causes more vehicle breakdowns. Fluids evaporate (water, battery fluids...), and diminished circulatiom.
* Battery failures
* Air conditioning repairs
* Tire replacements
* Breakdowns more likely to be emergency roadside assistance.
* Less ability to find and hire mechanics due to higher demand for repairs.

"The historic heat, generally attributed to climate change, affected roads and other right-of-way infrastructure in 18 counties, including Snohomish and prompted Gov. Jay Inslee to declare a state of emergency. ....The Washington State Department of Transportation estimates over $2.6 million in expenses for highways and interstates the agency manages. Government staff have over a year to submit funding requests.

Physics was the culprit. As something heats, it expands. But concrete in roads, generally hotter than recorded air temperature, can only expand so much before the pressure overwhelms expansion joints. For a surface like asphalt, the mixture can start to liquefy in sustained high temperatures. 'One of the reasons we experienced the problem we did is there was very little cooling at night for the concrete panels, causing them to continue to absorb heat and be prone to damage from expansion,' WSDOT spokesman Jordan Longacre said in an email. 'Concrete panels in our state are poured in cooler temperatures, so when temperature rises they tend to expand even more than a panel that is poured in warmer temperatures. This region experiences more significant temperature swings with thawing and freezing than other regions such as California and Arizona.' .... The temperatures partially liquefied asphalt on sections of Machias Road and the Mountain Loop Highway, causing the layers of asphalt and chip-seal overlay to separate. ....
'Heavy truck traffic can add stress and accelerate the damage,” Snohomish County road maintenance director Jim Parker said in an email. “A road in this state will often have a ‘wet’ or ‘shiny’ appearance, and parts of the surface layer may crack or come apart. In some rare circumstances and extreme heat the asphalt may become “sticky” and adhere to vehicle tires, causing potholes or a rough driving surface.'

RESULT: "Low- and High-Income households both drive less when they live closer to rail, but the size of that reduction is larger for higher-income households. For instance, those earning at least $100,000 who live zero miles from a rail station drive about 7 miles less per day than households earning the same amount who live a mile from a rail station."

"Studies from around the world have validated the existence of induced demand: each improvement to freeway capacity in urban areas generates more traffic. The best available science worldwide — in Europe, Japan and North America shows, a 'unit-elasticity' of travel with respect to capacity: A 1 percent expansion of capacity tends to generate 1 percent more vehicle miles traveled.

The fundamental law of road congestion requires us to fix broken traffic models and stop widening highways in a futile effort to reduce congestion. Call it what you will: Jevons Paradox, Braess Paradox, Marchetti’s Constant or Downs’ Triple Convergence, the science confirms them all."

DOES AN AUTOMOBILE FIT LIFESTYLE I WANT TO EXPERIENCE?

There are 5 Categorical Choices: No Automobile Use, Rent When Want/Needed, Lease, Buy Used Automobile, and Buy New Automobile

⸎ No car purchase, rental, or other use allows all transportation monies in one's budget to be saved, with total freedom to allocate for local public transit, Amtrak Passes and even more lavish long distance trips

⸎ Disadvantages of Owning an Automobile - Used or New:
⸎ Owning an automobile is expensive and has a lot of added costs, requiring additional costs to maintain and repair it, just to keep it running ...
⸎ Automobiles, both exhaust and tire erosion have increased the level of air, water, soil, and noise pollution especially in cities, where one meets more automobile drivers. This causes the city dwellers to suffer and even die from respiratory complications, heart diseases, and cancers.
⸎ City travelers have to spend longer hours in traffic jams due to congestion. Congestion is the induced demand to travel certain streets, stroads, roads, highways....

⸎ Drawbacks of Buying a Car
⸎ Buying Can Be More Expensive – in the Short Term.
Pay Interest on the Total Cost of Your Car.

Who leasing is best for
Leasing is the right option for you if you want to get behind the wheel of a vehicle without a substantial financial commitment upfront. Leasing eases the monthly cost to a more manageable number. It also allows you to drive a more luxurious vehicle than you might otherwise be able to afford.

But keep in mind the mileage restrictions and potential excess wear-and-tear charges that come along with leasing. If you have long road trips in your future, leasing might not be right for you.

Who buying is best for
If you prefer to be in total control when it comes to your vehicle and finances, buying might be best for you. You won’t have to worry about mileage restrictions or possible additional charges for things like wear and tear.

Although buying or financing your vehicle through a loan takes some extra homework, you will have full control of the vehicle and can sell or trade it in at any time — a benefit that leasing cannot offer.

Leasing a car
When you lease a car, you pay for the right to drive the vehicle for a fixed period — typically three or four years. Most leases are financed through the dealer.

You will usually pay an initial amount to drive your new vehicle off the lot to cover a range of taxes and fees. From there, you will make monthly payments over the life of the lease to cover the costs of depreciation of the vehicle.

There are typically restrictions on the number of miles you can drive the car during the lease term, and you have to return the vehicle to the dealer in excellent condition to avoid extra fees.
