"Leaving on a Jet Plane" - John Denver, Peter, Paul, and Mary (1969)
Airplanes consume the most gasoline traveling - being moved per person.
Electric battery-powered Airplanes? Lithium-ion batteries have/had the best chance of use as they are more compact, and use
a water cooling system. The biggest disadvantage - fire: short-circuiting, falling, and "thermal
runawaying"; ending in combustion. Hydrogen fuel is not an option, as it too is too combustible.
So no, there is no answer but shaving off bits of gasoline use through new airplane designs.
The answer is already in motion in many parts of the world: traveling by train for domestic, short distances (700 miles or
less) leaving airplane travel for continental and international travel. Most recently, France made it permanent; banning
any flights 2 and 1/2 hours long and shorter. Hi-Speed Rail not only is vital, it will take less time for people to get to
their destination as the time to get to an airport, check bags, and wait are hours. Simply board just like today via Amtrak,
and place your suitcases in baggage locations near your seat / car. Procrastination well over 32 years (Washington D.C.,
Baltimore...Boston), has only contributed to the vast cost. But waiting longer will cost even more.
"Just two people in a fairly efficient (30 mpg) car generates lower emissions per person than the average plane, and
even the most gas-guzzling, lumbering, reprehensible monstrosity of an SUV becomes competitive with aircraft if it carries
four or five passengers."
{Click Above}
"This chart shows average per-passenger fuel economy of various modes of travel. All forms of rail achieve relatively
high values because of high ridership, proportionally low drag, and high electrification rates (electricity
is inherently more efficient than combustion-engine propulsion). .... Transit buses are not very efficient at
their current ridership rates, where, on average, a given bus is less than 25% full. Demand response vehicles
are the least efficient because they need to use fuel just to get to the passenger."
Oak Ridge National Laboratory - Utah Battelle for the US Department of Energy:
"In all three analyzed years, passenger flights were responsible for approximately 85% of commercial aviation CO2
emissions. In 2019, this amounted to 785 million tonnes (Mt) of CO2. Between 2013 and 2019, passenger transport-related
CO2 emissions increased 33%. Over the same period, the number of flight departures increased 22% and revenue passenger
kilometers (RPKs) increased 50%. This means that passenger air traffic increased nearly four times faster than
fuel efficiency improved. ....
The top five departure countries for passenger aviation-related carbon emissions in 2019 are the United States, China, the
United Kingdom, Japan, and Germany. Flights departing airports in the United States and its territories emitted 23% of
global passenger transport-related CO2 in 2019, two-thirds of which came from domestic flights. ....
Smaller regional aircraft that are used on shorter flights emitted nearly 80% MORE CO2 per RPK than the global
average for all aircraft. Newer aircraft types like the Airbus A320neo (narrow body) and Boeing 787-9 (wide
body) emit between 30% and 50% less CO2 per RPK than the most inefficient legacy aircraft."
WORKING PAPER: ASSEMBLY - 40TH SESSION EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: "Agenda Item 16: Environmental Protection International Aviation
and Climate Change Policy and Standardization CO2 EMISSIONS FROM COMMERCIAL AVIATION, 2018 - Presented by the International
Coalition for Sustainable Aviation (ICSA) (2019)
"The combustion of jet fuel from domestic and international aviation accounts for more than 97% of U.S. aviation
CO2 emissions, with the remaining emissions coming from airport operations and fuel use from aviation
gasoline used by piston engines. Further, 80% of domestic aviation emissions and 94% of international aviation
emissions come from en-route operations. The CO2 emissions of U.S. domestic flights are roughly comparable to the
CO2 emissions of international flights. With these data in mind, the approach outlined in this document focuses on jet fuel
and the aircraft using it."
"The United Nations aviation body forecasts that airplane emissions of carbon dioxide, a major greenhouse gas, will reach
just over 900 million metric tons in 2018, and then triple by 2050.
But the new research from the International Council on Clean Transportation, found that emissions from global air travel may
be increasing more than 1.5 times as fast as the U.N. estimate. The researchers analyzed nearly 40 million flights
around the world last year.
'Airlines, for all intents and purposes, are becoming more fuel efficient. But we're seeing demand outstrip any of that,'
said Brandon Graver, who led the new study. 'The climate challenge for aviation is worse than anyone expected.'"
"The findings put pressure on airline regulators to take stronger action to fight climate change as they prepare for
a summit next week."

trips that would only take a few hours by car. For comparison, one of Mayweather's 10-minute flights produced one ton {2,000
pounds} of CO2, whereas the EPA reports that the typical car will emit 4.6 tons {4,600 pounds} of carbon dioxide annually."

It's Official Law: France Banned Short Haul Domestic Flights In Favour of Train Travel
"The basic concept of a night train is far from new: Comfortable sleeping cars on trains first became popular in the 1860s
in the United States, eventually leading to the launch of the Orient Express in Europe in the late 1800s."
"A French consumer association, UFC-Que Choisir, argues that including the longer flights would have the most impact on emissions;
the organization says that the plane trips emit an average of 77 times more CO2 per passenger than taking the train on
the same routes. It’s also less expensive to take the train than flying, and depending on the time that it
takes to get to the airport and wait in line, could conceivably be more convenient."

"The world around us is changing. We are travelling in different ways, to new places. More and more people are realizing how
simple, convenient and time-efficient rail travel is – just climb aboard, then work, socialize or rest. Other factors
helping to boost interest in the train and SJ include more departures to choose from, more customer-led offers, simpler booking
routines and greater climate awareness.
In the past 20 years, train travel has increased and all the signs are that this trend will continue. We at SJ have high ambitions
to live up to the expectations placed on us. We are continuing to develop our offering, and over the next few years, we will
be {just did} investing around SEK 12 billion in expanding our fleet with more, latest-technology trains. In 2020,
we are looking forward to welcoming our passengers aboard our new X 2000s, and in a few years' time, our new regional and

"Even under the ICAO's most optimistic scenario, research suggests that the airline industry is unlikely to
meet the organization's aspirational goal of a 2% per year improvement in fuel efficiency, and therefore CO2 reductions
(Fleming and de Lépinay 2019). ....
The most effective means of reducing travel-related emissions is to avoid traveling .... individuals and institutions who
need to travel and seek to reduce their travel-related CO2 impacts in the near term are left with two options: (1) purchase
offsets [i.e., GHG reductions at other locations of an amount equivalent to the given flight’s emissions, so that the
flight’s emissions are “offset” by the remote reduction (U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 2018)]; or
(2) use a different mode of travel that emits less GHGs ....

THE OTHER REASON FOR NO "SHORT HAUL FLIGHTS": RADIATION
THE OTHER REASON FOR NO "SHORT HAUL FLIGHTS": RADIATION
COSMIC IONIZING RADIATION = Type that originates from outer space, infecting, exposing high levels to those in flight altitudes;
especially effects those in the flight industry (captains and crewmembers), and their passengers. Also effects astronauts,
and those who live in sky stations. Little actually reaches Planet Earth.
Types of Cosmic radiation exposures on aircraft include:
always receiving galactic cosmic radiation (always present), and solar particle events, more popularly called, “solar
flares.”
"Why are we concerned about exposure to ionizing radiation?
Ionizing radiation is energy and particles given off by
unstable atoms in a natural process to become stable. When we are exposed to this radiation – from natural sources in
our environment, from the work that we do, or as a result of medical necessity – there is a potential for biological
damage to our cells and their DNA (genetic material) from the energy absorbed. Such damage can result in undesirable health
effects – an increased risk of illness, or even death, resulting from the exposure."
"The World Health Organization (WHO) International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) says that ionizing radiation causes
cancer in humans. Ionizing radiation is also known to cause reproductive problems."
"Study Examines Cancer Rates Among Flight Attendants" - The American Cancer Society (2018)
"Cancer Prevalence Among Flight Attendants Compared to the General Population" - Environmental Health (2018)
"Ionizing radiation is known to cause breast cancer by affecting hormonal regulation, oxidative stress, DNA damage,
inflammation reaction, and genomic variation. The IARC reported that there was sufficient evidence of the carcinogenic
effect of ionizing radiation in patients with breast cancer, even though the association between cancer development and exposure
to low-dose radiation remains controversial. In this case, it was assessed that the patient was exposed to 2.99–4.17
mSv of cosmic radiation annually on her occupational flight. According to the estimated natural radiation exposure dose of
the Spanish population, the annual dose was reported to be about 1.6 mSv. Compared to the patient’s occupation period
of about 20 years, the net occupational radiation exposure excluding natural exposure is about <>two times higher than
that of the general population."
"Most commercial airlines allow pregnant women to fly up to 36 weeks of gestation. Some restrict pregnant women
from international flights earlier in gestation and some require documentation of gestational age. For specific airline
requirements, women should check with the individual carrier. Civilian and military aircrew members who become
pregnant should check with their specific agencies for regulations or restrictions to their flying duties.
Air travel is not recommended at any time during pregnancy for women who have medical or obstetric conditions that may
be exacerbated by flight or that could require emergency care. The duration of the flight also should be considered when
planning travel. Pregnant women should be informed that the most common obstetric emergencies occur in the first and third
trimesters.
